SOCIAL ACTION
The mission of the Social Action Committee is to educate and recommend programs to the congregation regarding Jewish issues in the United States and around the world, local community issues, and worldwide issues that require a social action response. We hope to create an awareness of our Jewish presence in the community as well as communicate the positive work we do for the betterment of the community at large.
Upcoming Events:
Nothing but Nets Campaign - Malaria is the leading killer of children under the age of five in Africa. The "nothing but nets" campaign, begun by the URJ, will raise funds to purchase and distribute these nets. Please consider donating $10 to this worthwhile cause. We will send our monies to the URJ in the name of Congregation Beth Yam. The campaign will only last from April through the month of May. Make your checks payable to CBY and send them to the CBY office.
CODA (Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse) - We will visit the center on Sunday, May 4th and plant flowers (prepared by our Religious School children as their Mitzvah Day project). The center has also asked for the following items: toiletries, games such as checkers and Scrabble, and Fisher Price toys. Please bring your donations to the temple after April 6th and place them in the box in the lobby.
Family Promise - is a nationwide organization that provides services to low-income families so that they may become financially stable again. As the name of the program implies, this program is geared toward families that have fallen on hard times. A coalition of local churches and synagogues have joined together to help these families find work and supply them with food and shelter. Each host and support group will house families for one week, three times a year. CBY and All Saints Episcopal Church are working together to share the responsibilities for the weeks assigned to us. The families will be housed at the church. Please call the synagogue office (843-689-2178) or e-mail us at info@bethyam.org to find out the name and phone number of the Family Promise contacts.
